Lara Beach — Antalya's all-inclusive resort strip explained

12 km of beach, ~50 large hotels (mostly all-inclusive), themed mega-resorts (Topkapı, Pyramid, Mardan, Titanic). Beach access free; resort grounds private.

Lara Beach is Antalya's 12 km stretch of golden sand lined with roughly 50 large hotels, almost all operating on an all-inclusive basis. What most visitors get wrong is assuming this is a single public beach you can walk end to end; in reality, the shoreline is fragmented by hotel properties that claim private beach sections, and the only truly public access is at Lara Public Beach near the eastern end. The strip exists because of its proximity to Antalya Airport (AYT) — just 10 km away — making it the default choice for package-tour operators flying in sun-seekers. Themed mega-resorts like the Ottoman-castle Topkapı Palace Hotel, the literal Pyramid Hotel, and the once-most-expensive-in-Europe Mardan Palace (now Selectum Luxury Resort) define the skyline. This is not a place for spontaneous exploration; it is a purpose-built holiday machine where you check in, drop your bags, and don't leave the grounds until your flight home.

History

Lara Beach's transformation from a quiet coastal stretch to a tourism powerhouse began in the 1980s when Türkiye's tourism boom took off. Antalya Airport's expansion in the 1990s made the region accessible to European charter flights, and developers rushed to build large-scale hotels on the empty coastline between the city and the airport. The 2000s saw the rise of themed mega-resorts: Mardan Palace opened in 2009 as Europe's most expensive hotel at a reported $1.5 billion, featuring a Venetian-style piazza and a private yacht marina. The Pyramid Hotel and Topkapı Palace Hotel followed, each trying to outdo the other in scale and spectacle. By the 2010s, the strip had become synonymous with all-inclusive package holidays, with hotels competing on kids' clubs, water parks, and unlimited drinks. Today, the area is a self-contained resort corridor that operates almost independently of Antalya's historic centre, Kaleiçi, which lies 15 km west.

How to visit

If you're staying at one of the all-inclusive resorts, you don't need to plan anything — everything is on site. For day visitors, the only public beach access is Lara Public Beach, which you can reach by taxi from Antalya city centre (about 20 minutes, 200-300 TL) or by public bus (lines LC07 or LC08 from the city centre, 15 TL). The beach is free, but bring your own towel and umbrella — rentals are available for around 50 TL each. The best time to visit is May-June or September-October, when the weather is warm but the crowds are thinner. July and August are peak season: expect wall-to-wall sunbeds and queues at beach cafes. Wear swimwear under your clothes; there are changing cabins but they're basic. The beach is open 24/7, but lifeguards are only on duty during daylight hours. If you want to see the themed resorts, you can't enter the grounds without a reservation, but you can view them from the beach or take a boat tour along the coast (around 300 TL per person for a 2-hour cruise). Avoid walking along the beach between hotels — access is blocked by private property signs and security guards.

Cost and tickets

Lara Public Beach is free to enter. Sunbed and umbrella rental: 50-100 TL each. Public showers and changing cabins: 10-20 TL. Taxi from Antalya city centre: 200-300 TL. Bus: 15 TL. Boat tours along the coast: 300-500 TL per person for 2 hours. All-inclusive hotel rates vary wildly: expect $150-400 per night in peak season for a family of four, including meals and drinks. Day-use passes at some hotels (if available) run $50-100 per person.

What to skip

Skip the themed hotel grounds if you're not a guest — you can't enter anyway, and the exteriors are the best part. Skip the beach in August if you dislike crowds; the sand is packed and the water is hazy. Skip the hotel buffet dinners if you're a foodie — they're designed for volume, not quality. Skip walking the full 12 km of beach; it's monotonous and mostly blocked by hotels. Skip the 'traditional Turkish night' shows at resorts — they're touristy and overpriced.

FAQs

Is Lara Beach free to access?

Only the Lara Public Beach section is free. The rest of the 12 km shoreline is private hotel beach areas, accessible only to guests. If you're not staying at a resort, head to the public beach near the airport end.

How far is Lara Beach from Antalya Airport?

About 10 km, a 15-20 minute taxi ride. This proximity is why the strip exists — it's the closest beach resort to the airport, making it ideal for package tours.

Can I visit the themed resorts without staying there?

Generally no — the grounds are private. Some hotels allow day-use access for a fee (typically $50-100) or restaurant reservations. Check with the hotel directly. Otherwise, view them from the beach or a boat tour.

Is Lara Beach good for families with kids?

Yes, that's its main market. Most resorts have kids' clubs, water parks, and shallow beach areas. The all-inclusive format means no worrying about meals or activities. It's a low-effort family holiday destination.

Should I stay in Lara or Kaleiçi?

Stay in Lara if you want a beach-focused, all-inclusive package holiday with minimal planning. Stay in Kaleiçi if you prefer walkable streets, historic sites, local restaurants, and a more authentic Turkish experience. You can visit Lara beach as a day trip from Kaleiçi.
