Antalya province is huge. Kaleiçi (the old town) is the charming base for culture travelers. Lara has the mega all-inclusive resorts and the sandy beach. Konyaaltı has a long pebble beach closer to the old town. Choose based on whether you want a beach vacation or a walkable historic base.

When to visit Antalya

For most travelers, May or October are ideal: warm sea, fewer crowds, and reasonable prices. July and August are brutally hot and packed. December through February is quiet and cheap, but many coastal restaurants close. The underrated month is November – still pleasant, with autumn light and no queues.

Spring (March–May)

Pleasant but unpredictable

March can still be chilly and rainy; April brings wildflowers and the Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival starts in late April. By May, the sea is swimmable (around 22°C) and the city feels alive without being overrun. Hotels in Lara and Konyaaltı are half the summer price.

Summer (June–August)

Hot, crowded, expensive

June is already hot; July and August hit 35–40°C, with humidity making it worse. The beaches are shoulder-to-shoulder, and traffic on the coastal road is a nightmare. Air conditioning is mandatory. If you must come, stay in a resort with a pool – the old town is a sweatbox.

Autumn (September–November)

The sweet spot

September is still summer-hot but with fewer families. October is perfect: sea still warm (24°C), streets quieter, and prices drop. November sees cooler evenings and some rain, but the city is calm and many sights are empty. The International Antalya Film Festival runs in October.

Winter (December–February)

Quiet and cheap

Daytime temps hover around 15°C, with rain every few days. The old town is nearly tourist-free, and hotel rates can be 60% lower than summer. However, many beach clubs and coastal restaurants shut down. Good for museum visits and hiking in the nearby mountains, but not for swimming.

Best month

May. The sea is warm enough, the sun is strong but not punishing, and the city is in full bloom. The Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival starts, and you can still find decent hotel rates. It's the month when Antalya feels like it's waking up without the summer chaos.

Worst month

August. The combination of 40°C heat, crushing crowds, and premium prices makes it the least enjoyable month. The old town is a slow-moving river of people, and even the sea offers little relief because the water is bath-warm. Skip it unless you thrive in a sauna with queues.

Kaleiçi (Old Town)

Marina, Ottoman houses, Roman walls — the most atmospheric base for non-beach-only travelers.

Kaleiçi is the historic core of Antalya, a tight grid of narrow cobblestone streets inside Roman and Seljuk walls. The restored Ottoman houses now serve as boutique hotels, carpet shops, and rooftop bars overlooking the Roman harbor and the marina below. It's not a beach neighborhood — the nearest sand is a 20-minute walk or a short tram ride to Konyaaltı or Lara. But if you want to wake up to the call to prayer echoing over terracotta roofs, eat fresh fish at a meyhane on Hesapçı Sokak, and walk to Hadrian's Gate and the Yivli Minare in under ten minutes, this is the only base that makes sense. Best for couples and first-timers who prioritize atmosphere over sunbeds.

Pick this for old-town charm without committing to a big resort.

Lara

The big sandy beach strip — home of Turkey's famous themed mega-resorts.

Lara is a 12km stretch of sandy beach east of the city center, dominated by enormous all-inclusive resorts like the Mardan Palace and Rixos. The sand is genuinely good — rare for the Turkish Riviera — and the water is shallow, making it ideal for families with young children. But you are essentially inside a resort bubble: the hotels are self-contained, the restaurants are on-site, and getting to Kaleiçi requires a 20-minute taxi or a long dolmuş ride. There is no real neighborhood life here, just hotel lobbies and beach bars. If your idea of a holiday is pool slides, buffet dinners, and never leaving the property, Lara delivers. If you want to explore Antalya's old town, stay elsewhere.

Pick this for sandy beach + classic all-inclusive resort experience.

Konyaaltı

The long pebble beach on the west side — easier walk/tram to the old town.

Konyaaltı runs along the western edge of the city, a 7km pebble beach backed by a wide promenade popular with joggers, cyclists, and families. The water is clear and the views of the Taurus Mountains are striking, but the beach is small stones, not sand — bring water shoes. The tram line (AntRay) runs from Konyaaltı to the old town in about 10 minutes, so it's the best compromise for travelers who want beach time without being stranded in a resort. Hotels range from mid-range chains (like the Özkaymak Falez) to a few higher-end options. The vibe is more urban and less manicured than Lara, with actual restaurants and cafes along the beach road. Good for couples and active travelers who want a mix of beach and city.

Belek

Turkey's golf capital and home to its most lavish 5-star all-inclusives.

Belek is a resort town 30km east of Antalya, not a neighborhood of the city itself. It's known for its 16 golf courses and a string of luxury all-inclusive hotels like the Maxx Royal and the Cullinan, all set on long sandy beaches. The experience is entirely self-contained: you fly into Antalya Airport (AYT), take a 40-minute transfer, and never leave the property. There is no town center to walk to, no local restaurants to discover. If you want to play golf on championship courses or lie by a pool with a swim-up bar, Belek is excellent. If you want to see Antalya's old town or eat at a family-run meyhane, it's the wrong choice.

Practical Antalya

Getting around

Antalya Airport (AYT) is 13km east of Kaleiçi. The tram (T1) runs from the airport to the city center for about 15 TRY. Dolmuşes cover most routes at 10-20 TRY. Taxis from the airport to Kaleiçi cost $15-25. For beaches, take the tram to Konyaaltı or a dolmuş to Lara. Intercity buses from the main otogar connect to all major cities.

What to eat

Antalya's food scene leans hard on the sea and the orchard. Start with şakşuka (fried eggplant and peppers in tomato sauce) and hibeş (tahini-chili dip) at a meyhane in Kaleiçi. For mains, grilled çupra (sea bream) or levrek (sea bass) is standard; the local specialty is piyaz — a white bean salad with tahini, vinegar, and boiled eggs, best at a kebab shop near the old harbour. Don't skip tirmis (lupini beans) sold by street vendors, and finish with dondurma from a dondurmacı in the side streets. The region is not UNESCO-listed for food, but the citrus and pomegranate groves inland define the flavour profile.

Questions about staying in Antalya

Kaleiçi or the beach resorts — which is better?

Kaleiçi if you want to explore and walk. Lara or Belek if you want to never leave the pool. Many travelers split: 2 nights Kaleiçi, 3 nights at a resort.

What's the best beach in Antalya?

Lara for soft sand and resort vibes. Konyaaltı for the longer promenade and easier tram access to the old town. Both are excellent — pick by beach type.

Is Antalya safe for families?

Yes — Antalya is one of Turkey's most family-friendly destinations. The resort blocks in Belek (30 km east) and Lara (10 km east) are purpose-built for families with kids, with kids' clubs, all-inclusive food, large pools, and shuttle buses to the beach. Kaleiçi's old town works for families with older children — the harbour, the cable car up to the citadel, and the Antalya Museum keep teenagers engaged. Avoid the Konyaaltı party belt with young children.

Is Antalya airport close to the old town?

Antalya Airport (AYT) is about 13km east of Kaleiçi. A taxi costs around 250-350 TRY and takes 25 minutes without traffic. The tram (T1) runs from the airport to the city center for about 15 TRY but involves a 10-minute walk to Kaleiçi. If you're staying in Lara, the airport is closer — only 10km. Konyaaltı is further, about 20km. Factor this in when choosing your base.

Should I rent a car in Antalya?

Only if you're planning day trips to Olympos, Phaselis, or the waterfalls. Driving in Kaleiçi is a nightmare — narrow streets, scarce parking, and aggressive drivers. For beach resorts in Lara or Konyaaltı, a car is unnecessary. If you do rent, use the D400 coastal road but avoid it in July-August when traffic backs up for kilometers. Consider renting from a downtown office, not the airport, to save 20-30%.

What's the best time to visit Antalya?

April-May and September-October. The sea is warm enough to swim (22-26°C), crowds are thinner, and hotel prices drop 30-50% from July-August. June is tolerable but hot. July-August is unbearable for sightseeing — 35°C+ and humidity. December-February is cool (10-15°C) and rainy; many beachfront restaurants close. If you want to hike the Lycian Way, March or November are ideal.

Is Kaleiçi walkable for elderly travelers?

Partially. The main streets (Hesapçı, Uzun Çarşı) are flat and paved, but many side alleys have uneven cobblestones and steep steps. The Hadrian's Gate area is manageable, but the marina descent is slippery when wet. Taxis can drop you at the main square (Kale Kapısı). For a less strenuous stay, choose a hotel near the tram line or in Konyaaltı, which has flat seaside promenades.

How far is Kaleiçi from the airport?

Antalya Airport (AYT) is about 13km northeast of Kaleiçi. A taxi costs around 250-350 TRY and takes 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic. The tram (T1A or T1B) runs from the airport to the İsmetpaşa stop, a 5-minute walk from the old town gates, for about 15 TRY. Avoid the overpriced 'tourist shuttle' desks in arrivals.

Is Antalya good for a week-long trip?

Yes, but don't stay in one place. Split your time: 3 nights in Kaleiçi for the old town, harbour, and Hadrian's Gate, then 3 nights in Konyaaltı or Lara for beach time. Day trips to Olympos (90km southwest) or Termessos (35km northwest) break it up. A week in just a resort hotel will feel monotonous.

What's the best area for nightlife in Antalya?

Kaleiçi has the most character: bars along Hesapçı Sokak and the marina, like The Old Pub or Castle Bar, with live music and rakı. Avoid the neon-lit clubs near the clock tower — they're tourist traps. For a quieter drink, try the rooftop terrace at the Mavi Yengeç restaurant. Lara Beach has a few beach clubs, but they're mostly hotel bars.

Can you swim in the sea near Kaleiçi?

Not really. The old town's harbour is a marina with boats, not a swimming spot. The closest decent beach is Konyaaltı Beach, a 15-minute tram ride (to the Konyaaltı stop) or a 30-minute walk west. It's pebbly but clean, with free public sections. Lara Beach is 20 minutes east by car or bus (route KL08) and has sand, but it's crowded with resort sunbeds.

How much does a night in Antalya cost?

In Kaleiçi, expect $40-80 for a mid-range boutique hotel; budget hostels run $15-25. Lara's 5-star all-inclusives start around $120/night and can hit $300+ in peak season. Konyaaltı sits in between at $60-100. For a detailed breakdown, check our /planner/ page.

Are Antalya hotels wheelchair-accessible?

Honestly, not great outside the big Lara resorts. Most Kaleiçi hotels are in historic buildings with narrow doors and stairs. The newer Konyaaltı and Lara properties usually have ramps and lifts. Always call ahead — don't trust website claims. The airport is fine, but sidewalks in old town are rough.

How far ahead should I book Antalya hotels?

For July-August, book 3-4 months out — especially in Kaleiçi, where the best rooms go first. Shoulder seasons (April-May, September-October) allow 2-3 weeks. Last-minute deals exist in winter (November-March), when prices drop 30-40%. Lara resorts are more flexible year-round.

Are there pet-friendly hotels in Antalya?

Yes, but mostly in Lara and Konyaltı. Kaleiçi's narrow alleys and small rooms make pet stays rare. Big chains like Rixos and Titanic allow dogs under 10kg with a fee (around $30/night). Always confirm directly — many booking sites are wrong. No cats, usually.

Can I rent an apartment instead of a hotel in Antalya?

Yes, especially in Konyaaltı and around Lara. Airbnb has plenty of modern flats for $40-80/night. In Kaleiçi, you'll find fewer options and they're often noisy. Apart-hotels like the MIRAMOR in Konyaaltı offer hotel services with kitchenettes. For a week, apartments beat hotels on space and cost.
