Boat trips are the main event in Fethiye. The water is calm, the coves are pine-fringed, and the coastline is genuinely beautiful. But the reality of a day boat is less 'private yacht' and more 'floating bus' – you'll be with 30-50 other people, music playing, lunch served at a set time. That's fine if you know it going in. Bookings happen three ways: your hotel desk (convenient, slight markup), the dock at Fethiye harbor (best for last-minute negotiation), or online via operators like Kaptan Yachting or Fethiye Boat Tours (useful for comparing routes). Is it worth it? For the 12 Islands day trip, yes – it's the most efficient way to see the coves. For the Blue Cruise, absolutely – but only if you have 4 days to spare. The Butterfly Valley shuttle is a quick add-on, not a day out.
Your options
The standard 12 Islands day boat (Fethiye)
Duration: 8 hours (10am–6pm)
·
Price: around 800–1200 TL per person (2026)
Route: Yassıca Adaları (Flat Islands), Akvaryum Bay, Tersane Island, Göcek Bay, Red Island, Cold Water Bay
The classic Fethiye boat trip. You'll stop at 5-6 coves for swimming, lunch is included (usually chicken or meatballs with rice, salad, fruit). The boat is a converted wooden gulet, not a luxury yacht. Best for first-timers or families who want a low-effort day on the water. Skip if you hate crowds – these boats can be full in July.
Blue Cruise gulet, 4 nights Fethiye to Olympos
Duration: 4 days / 3 nights (or 3 days / 2 nights)
·
Price: around €300–€500 per person all-inclusive (2026)
Route: Ölüdeniz, Butterfly Valley, Kalkan, Kaş, Üçağız, Kekova, Olympos
The classic Mavi Yolculuk. You sleep on the gulet, eat onboard, swim in remote coves. The route hugs the coast, passing ancient Lycian ruins (Simena, Kekova). It's social – you'll eat with the group. Best for solo travelers or couples who want a proper escape. Skip if you need privacy or hate shared bathrooms. The 3-day version feels rushed; pay for 4.
Butterfly Valley boat shuttle (from Ölüdeniz)
Duration: 30 min each way + time in valley
·
Price: around 150 TL round trip per person
Route: Ölüdeniz beach to Butterfly Valley
A simple shuttle, not a tour. Boats leave from Ölüdeniz beach every 30 min. The valley is a steep hike to a waterfall and a beach with a seasonal cafe. The butterflies (Jersey tiger moths) are only active June–September. Worth it for the hike and the quiet beach, but don't expect a full day out. Combine with a morning at Ölüdeniz.
Göcek 12 Islands day boat (from Göcek)
Duration: 8 hours (10am–6pm)
·
Price: around 900–1300 TL per person
Route: Tersane Island, Bedri Rahmi Bay, Sarsala Bay, Yassıca Adaları, Akvaryum Bay
Similar to the Fethiye version but from the upmarket town of Göcek, 20 min east. The boats are slightly newer, the crowd a bit more affluent. The route overlaps with Fethiye's but includes Bedri Rahmi Bay (a famous painting spot). Best if you're staying in Göcek and want a quieter departure. Otherwise, Fethiye's boats are fine.
Private gulet charter (custom day or multi-day)
Duration: 1–7 days
·
Price: around €800–€2000 per day for a 10-person gulet
Route: Custom – any cove from Fethiye to Göcek
The only way to avoid crowds. You choose the route, the food, the music. Worth it for a group of 6–10 splitting the cost. The standard day boats cover the same water, so only go private if you want solitude or a special occasion. Book through a local agency like Kaptan Yachting or Fethiye Gulet.
Sunset cruise (Fethiye harbor)
Duration: 2–3 hours
·
Price: around 500–700 TL per person
Route: Fethiye Bay, no swimming stops
A short evening sail with drinks and snacks. You'll see the sun set behind the mountains. Nice for a relaxed end to the day, but the water is often choppy and the boats can be crowded. Best for couples who want a romantic hour without the full day commitment. Skip if you'd rather have a meyhane dinner on land.
How to book (and avoid getting ripped off)
For day boats, the best approach is to walk the Fethiye harbor (next to the fish market) around 9am and negotiate directly with the boat captains. You'll see the boats lined up with their routes on boards. Standard price is 800–1200 TL; you can often haggle down to 700 TL in shoulder season. Avoid booking through random touts on the street – they take a commission. For the Blue Cruise, book at least a week ahead in summer via a reputable agency like Kaptan Yachting, Fethiye Gulet, or Deep Blue. Prices for 4-day trips start around €300. Red flags: anyone promising 'private' for under €500 (it's a shared boat), or boats that look rusty and have no life jackets visible. Online booking is fine for the Blue Cruise but unnecessary for day boats – just show up.
What to bring
High-SPF sunscreen (50+), a hat, and sunglasses – the UV reflects off the water. Anti-jellyfish lotion or a stinger suit if you're going in August (jellyfish blooms in Akvaryum Bay). Sea shoes for pebbly disembarks at Tersane and Bedri Rahmi. A dry-bag for your phone and wallet. A light jacket for the wind on the return. Cash for the optional soft drinks and snacks onboard (many boats don't take cards).
What to skip
Skip the '12 Islands' boat that advertises 'all drinks included' – the drinks are usually cheap and the price is inflated. The 3-day Blue Cruise is too rushed; you'll spend more time sailing than swimming. Avoid boats that stop at 'private beaches' – they're just restaurants paying commission. The Butterfly Valley shuttle is fine, but the valley itself is overrated if you're not into hiking or butterflies. For a better cove experience, take a day boat to Tersane Island instead.
