Cappadocia balloon flight rate hits 95% as Aegean enters early heatwave

Cappadocia balloon operators are reporting May flight success above 95%. Bodrum, Çeşme, and the Aegean coast hit unusually high mid-May temperatures.

Cappadocia balloon companies are reporting a flight-success rate above 95% so far in May 2026 — among the strongest spring seasons of the past five years. The cooperative that coordinates flight clearance with the Turkish DGCA confirmed only six no-fly mornings since the start of April. Travelers booking now for late May–early June trips can reasonably expect a successful flight on the first morning attempt.

Separately, the Aegean coast (Bodrum, Çeşme, Kuşadası, Foça) has hit an unusually early heatwave, with daytime highs touching 33–35°C in mid-May. The Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM) issued a yellow heat warning for İzmir and Aydın provinces on May 20. Beach hotels report walk-in availability dropping fast for the next two weeks as European travelers shift dates earlier. If you're traveling to the Aegean coast in late May or early June, book your hotel sooner than the usual 4-week lead time.

On the Mediterranean side, Antalya remains pleasant (28–30°C) and Lara/Konyaaltı occupancy is at typical-for-the-week levels.

The Turkish Lira closed last week at 39.4 TL/USD and 42.6 TL/EUR — stable for the third week running. Our live converter has the current ECB rate.

Why this brief exists

Most travel content is written once and never updated. Turkey travel particularly suffers from this — flight schedules change, festival programs change, the lira's exchange rate moves week to week, and "what was true in 2023" is often outdated by the time a traveler reads it. This weekly brief exists to keep Where to Stay in Turkey honest. We publish only when there's something genuinely worth saying — typically once a week, sometimes twice when there's a route launch or notable currency move, occasionally none if the week was quiet.

If you find a brief useful and want it in your inbox, email us and we'll add you to the weekly digest. If you spot something we got wrong — a flight schedule changed, a festival date shifted, a price quoted here doesn't match what you saw on the ground — tell us. We update visibly.
