Istanbul ferries — Bosphorus, Princes' Islands, commuter

Five operators, two coasts, one of the world's great commutes.

Related: Istanbul guide

Istanbul's ferries are not a tourist attraction—they're the city's circulatory system. Five operators, two coasts, and one of the world's great commutes. Forget the metro for a moment: the Bosphorus is the fastest way across town, and the view costs the same as a bus ticket. The system is chaotic but logical once you understand the piers. Eminönü is the hub, Kabataş the gateway to the Princes' Islands, and Kadıköy the Asian-side anchor. You'll share a deck with commuters, fishermen, and tea sellers. This is how Istanbul actually moves.

There are three types of ferry: the classic red-and-white city ferries (Şehir Hatları), the faster catamarans (IDO), and private lines (Dentur, Turyol, Mavi Marmara). Şehir Hatları is the backbone—cheap, slow, scenic. IDO is faster but pricier, mainly for longer crossings like Yenikapı to Bursa. The private operators run the same commuter routes with slightly different schedules. Don't overthink which one; they all accept the same payment.

The real magic is the Bosphorus line from Eminönü to Anadolu Kavağı—a 90-minute ride past fortresses and yalıs for 17 TL. But the daily commute from Kadıköy to Eminönü at 8 AM is just as essential: suits, students, and simit sellers. Skip the tourist boats. Ride with the locals.

How it works

Payment is via Istanbulkart, the same card used for metro, bus, and tram. Tap at the turnstile before boarding. Single ride: 17 TL (~$0.55) as of early 2026. No paper tickets on ferries. You can buy an Istanbulkart at any pier kiosk for 50 TL (refundable) and load it with cash. The card works across all operators—Şehir Hatları, IDO, Dentur, etc. Transfers are free within 120 minutes between ferry and other public transport (but not between two ferries).

Ferries run from roughly 6:00 AM to midnight, with reduced frequency after 10 PM. The Bosphorus sightseeing line (Eminönü–Anadolu Kavağı) runs 2–3 times daily, check the app. Princes' Islands ferries depart Kabataş and Bostancı every 1–2 hours in summer, less in winter. IDO catamarans to Bursa/Yalova run hourly from Yenikapı. Schedules are seasonal; always check the Şehir Hatları app or website. Don't rely on Google Maps—it's often wrong for ferry times.

Key stops, routes, and operators

Eminönü pier (the central ferry hub)

Kabataş pier (Princes' Islands departures)

Karaköy + Beşiktaş (Bosphorus + Asian-side runs)

Üsküdar pier (Asian-side commuter)

Kadıköy pier (Kadıköy↔Eminönü, the iconic crossing)

Bostancı pier (alternative to Kabataş for islands)

Yenikapı pier (IDO fast catamarans to Bursa/Yalova)

What it costs

A single ferry ride on any city line (Şehir Hatları, Dentur, Turyol, Mavi Marmara) costs 17 TL (~$0.55) with Istanbulkart. IDO catamarans to Bursa/Yalova cost 100–120 TL (~$3.20–$3.85). The Bosphorus sightseeing line (Eminönü–Anadolu Kavağı) is also 17 TL. A day of 3–4 ferry rides will cost around 50–70 TL (~$1.60–$2.25). The Istanbulkart itself costs 50 TL (refundable). No day pass exists for ferries alone, but the Istanbulkart's 120-minute transfer window means you can hop between metro and ferry for a single fare.

Practical tips

Download the Şehir Hatları app (iOS/Android) for real-time schedules. Google Maps shows ferry routes but not always accurate departure times. The app is in Turkish but easy to navigate: look for 'Sefer Saatleri' (Schedules).

Avoid the tourist Bosphorus cruises that cost 100+ TL. The public ferry from Eminönü to Anadolu Kavağı (17 TL) is the same route, same views, and you can get off at any stop. The only difference: no English commentary. Bring your own.

If you're prone to seasickness, sit on the lower deck or outside. The Bosphorus can get choppy in winter. Summer ferries are packed on weekends—avoid the 10 AM departure to the Princes' Islands if you value personal space.

For the Princes' Islands, buy a return ticket (same Istanbulkart) to avoid queues. The last ferry back from Büyükada is around 7 PM in summer, earlier in winter. Don't miss it—taxis on the island are expensive and rare.

The Yenikapı–Bursa IDO catamaran is a good alternative to the bus for Bursa. It's faster and more comfortable. Book online in summer; walk-up tickets sell out.

Don't use the ferry for short crossings like Karaköy to Eminönü—it's faster to walk across the Galata Bridge. The ferry is only worth it for longer trips or the experience.

Common tourist mistakes

1) Buying a paper token (jeton) instead of an Istanbulkart—jetons cost 20 TL and can't transfer. 2) Boarding the wrong ferry at Eminönü—check the digital board for your pier number. 3) Sitting on the lower deck in summer—it's hot and smells like diesel. 4) Trying to pay cash onboard—ferries are card-only at turnstiles. 5) Taking the tourist Bosphorus cruise from Eminönü (100 TL) when the public ferry does the same route for 17 TL.

FAQs

How do I start using the ferries?

Buy an Istanbulkart from any pier kiosk (50 TL refundable). Load it with cash. Tap at the turnstile before boarding. The card works on all operators. Don't buy from scalpers—official kiosks are clearly marked. If you're staying for 3+ days, load 200 TL to cover metro, tram, and ferries.

What does a ferry ride cost?

17 TL (~$0.55) per ride with Istanbulkart, regardless of distance. IDO catamarans to Bursa cost 100–120 TL. No cash accepted. The Istanbulkart also works for transfers to metro/bus within 120 minutes for free (one transfer).

Can I transfer between ferries and other transport?

Yes, within 120 minutes of your first tap. You can go ferry→metro→bus for a single fare (17 TL). But transferring between two different ferry lines (e.g., Kadıköy→Eminönü then Eminönü→Beşiktaş) counts as a new ride—you'll pay again.

How often do ferries run?

Commuter lines (Kadıköy–Eminönü) every 15–20 minutes from 6 AM to midnight. Bosphorus sightseeing line runs 2–3 times daily. Princes' Islands ferries every 1–2 hours in summer, less in winter. IDO catamarans hourly. Always check the Şehir Hatları app for real-time schedules.

What's the best alternative to a ferry?

For crossing the Bosphorus, the metro under the strait (Marmaray) is faster but has no views. For Princes' Islands, a private speedboat from Bostancı costs more (50 TL) but is faster. For Bursa, the bus from Esenler Otogar is cheaper but slower. Ferries are still the best value for scenery.

Can I bring a bike or pet on the ferry?

Yes, bicycles are allowed on all city ferries for free—just walk it on. Pets in carriers are allowed. Dogs on leash are allowed on outer decks. Avoid rush hour (7–9 AM, 5–7 PM) with a bike; it's crowded. IDO catamarans charge 10 TL for a bike.
