Cultural deep-dive · 10 days

Eastern Turkey: a 10-day deep-cultural loop

Gaziantep, Mardin, Şanlıurfa, Cappadocia. The route that earns a second Turkey trip: Byzantine ruins, Syriac monasteries, Göbekli Tepe, and the best food in the country.

This 10-day loop through eastern Turkey is for travelers who want to see the region's deep history without the crowds of the coast. You'll fly between cities, so the pace is brisk but manageable. The tradeoff: you'll have only one full day in Cappadocia, which feels rushed—skip the second valley hike and prioritize the balloons and a single walk. This itinerary works best for history buffs and food lovers, not for those seeking relaxation.

You'll sleep in

Day by day

Day 1 — Arrival in Istanbul

Base: Istanbul · Istanbul guide

Land at IST around noon. Take the Havaist bus to Sultanahmet ($8, 90 minutes). Drop bags at a hotel near the Blue Mosque, then walk to the Basilica Cistern (skip the Hagia Sophia line if it's long—it's overrated). Dinner at a meyhane in Cihangir, not Sultanahmet. Sleep in Sultanahmet for convenience.

Day 2 — Fly to Gaziantep + copper market

Base: Gaziantep · Gaziantep guide

Early flight to Gaziantep (1.5 hours, $50-80). Check into a hotel in the Şehreküstü district. Afternoon at the copper market in the old bazaar—buy a small tray, not a massive pot. Dinner at a kebab shop on İstasyon Caddesi. Skip the Gaziantep Museum of Archaeology unless you have extra time; the real draw is the food.

Day 3 — Zeugma mosaics + baklava tour

Base: Gaziantep · Gaziantep guide

Morning at the Zeugma Mosaic Museum (2-3 hours, $5). Don't miss the Gypsy Girl mosaic. After lunch, join a baklava tasting tour—three shops in 90 minutes, $20. Skip the castle; it's a modern rebuild. Dinner at a riverside meyhane in the Bey neighborhood. Sleep in Şehreküstü.

Day 4 — Drive to Şanlıurfa + Balıklıgöl

Base: Şanlıurfa · Şanlıurfa guide

Rent a car or hire a driver for the 2-hour drive to Şanlıurfa ($60). Check into a hotel near Balıklıgöl. Afternoon at the sacred pool—feed the fish, visit the cave where Abraham was born. Evening walk through the bazaar. Dinner at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the pool. Skip the Harran ruins; they're 45km away and disappointing.

Day 5 — Göbekli Tepe at sunrise

Base: Şanlıurfa · Şanlıurfa guide

4am pickup for Göbekli Tepe (30km east, $15 entry). Arrive by 5am to see the sunrise over the T-shaped pillars—you'll have the site almost to yourself. Back by 9am for breakfast. Rest until lunch, then visit the Şanlıurfa Museum (excellent, $4). Dinner at a çiğ köfte joint. Sleep in Urfa.

Day 6 — Drive to Mardin + old town

Base: Mardin · Mardin guide

3-hour drive to Mardin ($70 with driver). Check into a stone hotel in the old town. Afternoon walk down the main street—visit the Zinciriye Medrese and the Mardin Museum. Sunset from the terrace of the Kasımiye Medrese. Dinner at a restaurant with a view of the Mesopotamian plain. Skip the Mardin Castle; it's closed for renovation.

Day 7 — Deyrulzafaran + Midyat

Base: Mardin · Mardin guide

Morning trip to Deyrulzafaran Monastery (20km east, 30 minutes, $5). The Syriac Orthodox monastery is still active—ask to see the crypt. Then drive to Midyat (45 minutes) for lunch and a walk through the old town's stone alleys. Back to Mardin by late afternoon. Dinner at a local kebab shop. Skip the silver market in Midyat; it's overpriced.

Day 8 — Fly to Cappadocia

Base: Cappadocia · Cappadocia guide

Morning flight from Mardin to Kayseri (via Istanbul, 5 hours total, $100-150). Transfer to Göreme (45 minutes, $15). Check into a cave hotel. Afternoon walk through the Göreme Open Air Museum ($15, 2 hours). Dinner at a restaurant in the village center. Skip the pottery town of Avanos unless you have a full day.

Day 9 — Balloons + valleys

Base: Cappadocia · Cappadocia guide

4am pickup for the balloon flight ($150-200, 1 hour). After breakfast, hike the Rose Valley (3 hours, easy). Lunch in Çavuşin. Afternoon at a carpet shop (don't buy). Sunset from the Lover's Hill viewpoint. Dinner at a cave restaurant. Skip the underground cities—they're crowded and claustrophobic.

Day 10 — Back to Istanbul + departure

Base: Istanbul · Istanbul guide

Morning flight to Istanbul (1.5 hours, $40-60). If your flight is after 4pm, take a taxi to Kadıköy for lunch and a walk along the Bosphorus. Otherwise, head directly to the airport. Don't try to squeeze in a last-minute museum visit—you'll miss your flight.

What this trip actually costs

$1,800-2,400 per person: international flights $600-800, internal flights $200-300, hotels $500-700 (mid-range), meals + activities $400-600. Drivers for long transfers add $150-200.

FAQs about this itinerary

Can I do this trip in less than 10 days?

You could cut it to 8 days by skipping Mardin and flying directly from Şanlıurfa to Cappadocia. But you'd miss the best preserved old town in Turkey. I wouldn't recommend it—Mardin is the highlight for many travelers.

Is this safe for solo travelers?

Yes, especially if you're male. Solo women should be cautious in Şanlıurfa and Mardin after dark—stick to main streets. The region is conservative but welcoming. Join a group for Göbekli Tepe at sunrise to avoid early-morning isolation.

What if the balloon flight gets cancelled?

Balloons cancel often in windy weather. If it happens, you have two options: rebook for the next morning (if your flight schedule allows) or replace it with a sunrise hike in the valleys. Don't pay extra for a 'guaranteed' flight—no one can guarantee weather.

Should I book this through a tour company?

Not necessary. Book internal flights and hotels yourself; the route is straightforward. Use local drivers for the long drives (ask your hotel). For Göbekli Tepe, hire a private driver for $30-40—it's cheaper than a tour and you control the timing.

Best month for this route?

April, May, September, or October. Summer (June-August) is brutally hot in Şanlıurfa and Gaziantep—temperatures hit 40°C. Winter is cold in Cappadocia and Mardin, with occasional snow. Spring and autumn give you mild days and fewer crowds.
