7 days in Turkey: the classic first-trip itinerary

Istanbul + Cappadocia with one buffer day. The most efficient way to do Turkey in a week — every minute justified.

This is the classic first-timer's Turkey loop: three days in Istanbul, three in Cappadocia, with a flight between. It works because you hit the two biggest draws — Ottoman monuments and fairy chimneys — without overcomplicating logistics. The tradeoff: Cappadocia feels rushed. You'll have exactly two full days on the ground, which means you'll see the highlights but won't have time for a slow hike or a random village lunch. If you're the type who hates checking boxes, add a day. But for a first taste, this route is efficient and leaves you wanting more.

You'll sleep in

Day by day

Day 1 — Arrival in Istanbul

Base: Istanbul · Istanbul guide

Land at Istanbul Airport (IST), 40km west of the city. Take the Havaist shuttle ($10, 90 min) or a taxi ($40) to Sultanahmet. Check into a hotel in the old city — you want walking distance to Hagia Sophia. Spend the afternoon recovering with a slow walk through Gülhane Park, then dinner at a rooftop restaurant with sea views (expect $25-35 for a full meal). Skip the Grand Bazaar today — it's overwhelming on arrival. Sleep in Sultanahmet.

Day 2 — Old city (Sultanahmet)

Base: Istanbul · Istanbul guide

Start at Hagia Sophia (free entry, opens 9am) — go early to avoid queues. Walk 3 minutes to the Basilica Cistern ($10, 20 min visit). Then the Blue Mosque (free, closed during prayer). Lunch at a döner spot near Divan Yolu ($8). Afternoon: Topkapi Palace ($20, 2-3 hours). Skip the harem section unless you have extra time. Evening: walk to the Grand Bazaar (closes 7pm) for a quick wander. Dinner at a meyhane in Kumkapı ($30).

Day 3 — Bosphorus + Beyoğlu

Base: Istanbul · Istanbul guide

Morning: Bosphorus ferry from Eminönü to Üsküdar ($1, 25 min) — sit on the right for skyline views. Disembark, walk to the Kuleli waterfront, then ferry back. Lunch at a balık ekmek stand by the Galata Bridge ($5). Afternoon: walk across the bridge to Karaköy, then up to Galata Tower ($10, skip the queue — the view is fine from the street). Evening in Beyoğlu: Istiklal Street is crowded but worth one pass. Dinner at a meyhane on Nevizade Street ($35). Stay in Sultanahmet again.

Day 4 — Fly to Cappadocia + sunset

Base: Cappadocia · Cappadocia guide

Morning flight from Istanbul's Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) or IST to Kayseri (ASR) — 90 min, $50-80. Arrange a shuttle to Göreme ($10, 45 min). Check into a cave-suite hotel in Göreme. Afternoon: rent a scooter or join a guided walk through Rose Valley (2 hours, easy). Sunset from Lovers' Hill — a 15-min walk from town. Dinner at a restaurant with a terrace in Göreme ($20). Skip the pottery workshops — they're touristy. Sleep in Göreme.

Day 5 — Balloons + Göreme valleys

Base: Cappadocia · Cappadocia guide

4am pickup for balloon flight ($150-200, 1 hour in air). You'll float over the valleys at sunrise. Back by 8am for breakfast. Morning: walk the Göreme Open-Air Museum ($15, 1.5 hours). Skip the Dark Church add-on ($10 extra) unless you're a fresco fanatic. Afternoon: hike the Pigeon Valley trail (3km, 1 hour) from Göreme to Uçhisar. Visit Uçhisar Castle ($5). Dinner at a local ocakbaşı in Göreme ($15). Sleep in Göreme.

Day 6 — Underground city + Pasabag

Base: Cappadocia · Cappadocia guide

Morning: drive 20 min to Derinkuyu underground city ($10, 1.5 hours). It's the deepest — go early to avoid crowds. Then 15 min to Ihlara Valley? No, skip Ihlara — it's 40 min away and not worth the drive for one day. Instead, head to Pasabag (Monks Valley, free, 30 min) and Devrent Valley (Imagination Valley, free, 20 min). Lunch in Avanos ($12). Afternoon: pottery demo in Avanos (free, tip optional). Return to Göreme for a Turkish bath ($30). Sleep in Göreme.

Day 7 — Back to Istanbul + departure

Base: Istanbul · Istanbul guide

Morning flight from Kayseri to Istanbul ($50-80). If your flight home is after 4pm, store luggage at the airport ($5) and take the M11 metro to Gayrettepe ($2, 30 min) for lunch in Beşiktaş — try a fish sandwich by the ferry pier ($6). Otherwise, head straight to the airport. Don't try to squeeze in a last-minute Grand Bazaar visit — you'll stress about timing. Fly out from IST or SAW.

FAQs about this itinerary

Can I do this trip in 5 days instead of 7?

You can, but you'll cut one day from either city. The most efficient trim: skip Day 3 (Bosphorus + Beyoğlu) and fly to Cappadocia on Day 2 evening. That gives you one full day in Cappadocia (balloon + valleys) and a half-day for underground city before flying back. You'll miss the Bosphorus cruise and Beyoğlu's nightlife. It's doable but rushed — I'd only recommend it if you're a fast traveler.

Is this itinerary safe for solo travelers?

Yes, very. Istanbul and Göreme are safe for solo travelers, including women. The main concern is touts in the Grand Bazaar and taxi scams — use Uber or official taxi stands. Cappadocia's valleys are well-marked for hiking, but don't hike alone after dark. The balloon companies handle solo bookings fine. You'll meet other travelers in Göreme hostels or common hotel terraces.

What if the balloon flight gets cancelled?

Balloons cancel often due to wind — about 20% of flights in spring/fall. Book the first morning (Day 5). If cancelled, most companies reschedule for Day 6 morning. That means you'll do the underground city on Day 5 afternoon instead. If both days are cancelled, you get a refund (usually full). Don't skip Cappadocia if you can't fly — the valleys are still worth it.

Should I book this through a tour company?

Not necessary. This itinerary is easy to DIY. Book flights on Turkish Airlines or Pegasus directly. Hotels on Booking.com. Balloon flights via your hotel (they get better rates than online). The only thing a tour helps with is airport transfers in Cappadocia — but shuttles are cheap and reliable. You'll save 20-30% doing it yourself, and you'll have more flexibility on timing.

Best month for this route?

April-May and September-October. Crowds are moderate, temperatures are 15-25°C, and balloon cancellations are less frequent than in winter. July-August is hot (35°C in Cappadocia) and crowded — you'll queue 30 min for Hagia Sophia. December-February is cold (0-10°C) and snowy; Cappadocia looks beautiful but some valleys are muddy. Avoid November — rain and fog can ground balloons for days.
