Turkey with kids: a 10-day family itinerary

Built for families with 4–12 year-olds: shorter sightseeing blocks, pool afternoons, balloon and underground-city excitement, and a 4-night beach finale at an all-inclusive that actually has decent food.

This itinerary is designed for families who want a taste of Turkey without the chaos of constant relocation. It works because it front-loads Istanbul's big sights and ends with three lazy days on the Mediterranean, which is what kids actually remember. The tradeoff: Cappadocia gets two nights, which means you'll be rushed — you'll see the highlights but won't have time for spontaneous hikes or second dips in the cave pool. If your family hates early mornings, skip the balloon and sleep in.

Day by day

Day 1 — Arrival + ferry hop

Base: Istanbul · Istanbul guide

Land at Istanbul Airport, take the Havaist bus ($5) to Sultanahmet. Drop bags at a family-friendly hotel like the Four Seasons Sultanahmet or a cheaper option near Gülhane Park. By 3pm walk to Eminönü pier, catch a 20-minute ferry to Kadıköy. Let kids run around the market square, grab simit from a street cart, and ride the nostalgic tram. Dinner at a casual kebab spot on Moda Caddesi. Back by 9pm. Skip the Galata Tower — the queue is brutal and the view is fine from the ferry.

Day 2 — Hagia Sophia (morning only) + Miniaturk

Base: Istanbul · Istanbul guide

Enter Hagia Sophia at 9am sharp (free entry, but arrive early to avoid the 30-min queue). Spend 45 minutes inside — kids will like the giant dome and calligraphy shields. By 10:30 walk to the Basilica Cistern ($10, skip if claustrophobic). Then take tram to Miniaturk ($8), Turkey's park of mini landmarks. Let kids run for 90 minutes. Lunch at the park's cafe. Nap back at hotel. Evening: stroll through Arasta Bazaar near Blue Mosque — less pushy than Grand Bazaar. Stay in Sultanahmet.

Day 3 — Grand Bazaar + Bosphorus cruise

Base: Istanbul · Istanbul guide

Enter Grand Bazaar at 10am via Beyazıt Gate. Keep kids on a leash — it's crowded. Buy one thing (a ceramic plate or evil eye) and leave by 11:30. Walk to Eminönü for a 2-hour Bosphorus cruise ($10 per person, departs hourly). Kids love seeing the bridges and palaces from water. Lunch at a balık ekmek boat near the pier. Afternoon free for hotel pool or a nap. Dinner at a rooftop restaurant in Sultanahmet with Bosphorus view. Skip the Spice Bazaar — it's a smaller version of Grand Bazaar.

Day 4 — Fly to Cappadocia

Base: Cappadocia · Cappadocia guide

Morning flight from Istanbul to Kayseri (1.5 hours, $50-80 per person with Turkish Airlines). Arrange a private transfer ($30) to Göreme, 50 minutes. Check into a cave hotel like Museum Hotel or a budget cave room. By 2pm walk to Göreme Open Air Museum ($10) — the dark church is worth the extra $5. Kids can climb the rock-cut churches. Dinner at a restaurant with a terrace in Göreme town. Skip the Uçhisar Castle — the view is similar to your hotel rooftop.

Day 5 — Balloons + horseback + cave pool

Base: Cappadocia · Cappadocia guide

4am pickup for balloon flight ($150-200 per person). Flight lasts 1 hour over the valleys. Back to hotel for breakfast by 8am. 10am: 1-hour horseback ride through Rose Valley ($30 per person, ages 6+). Afternoon: swim at your hotel's cave pool or the public pool in Göreme. Dinner at a local pide joint. Skip the sunset ATV tour — it's dusty and noisy for young kids.

Day 6 — Underground city + pottery workshop

Base: Cappadocia · Cappadocia guide

9am drive to Derinkuyu Underground City (20 min, $8). Go down 8 levels — kids will be amazed by the ventilation shafts and rolling stone doors. Leave by 11am (it gets claustrophobic). Drive to Avanos for a 1-hour pottery workshop ($15 per person, hands-on wheel). Lunch at a riverside restaurant. Afternoon free for souvenir shopping in Göreme. Evening flight to Antalya (1.5 hours, $60-100 per person). Transfer to Kemer or Belek for all-inclusive resort. Skip the Ihlara Valley hike — too long for kids.

Day 7 — Fly to Antalya, all-inclusive check-in

Base: Antalya · Antalya guide

Morning flight from Kayseri to Antalya (1.5 hours, $60-100 per person). Transfer to a beach resort in Kemer or Belek (30 min). Check in by noon. Spend afternoon at the resort's pool or private beach. Kids' club activities from 2-5pm. Dinner at the buffet. Skip exploring Antalya old town — you're here to relax.

Day 8 — Pool day + Aspendos kids' tour

Base: Antalya · Antalya guide

Morning by the pool. After lunch, drive 30 minutes to Aspendos Roman Theatre ($8). Kids can run on stage and test the acoustics. Guided tour takes 45 minutes. Back to resort by 4pm for more swimming. Evening: resort entertainment (mini disco for kids). Skip the Perge ruins — Aspendos is more impressive for children.

Day 9 — Beach + waterpark afternoon

Base: Antalya · Antalya guide

Morning on the resort beach. After lunch, take a taxi to a nearby waterpark (e.g. Aqualand in Belek, $20 per person, open 10am-5pm). Kids can do slides for 3 hours. Back to resort for dinner. Skip the boat trip — it's long and kids get bored.

Day 10 — Fly back + departure

Base: Istanbul · Istanbul guide

Breakfast at resort. Transfer to Antalya Airport (30 min). Fly to Istanbul (1.5 hours) for your international connection. If you have a layover, use the airport's kids' play area near gate B. Skip any last-minute shopping — prices are higher at the airport.

FAQs about this itinerary

Can I do this trip in less time?

You could cut it to 7 days by skipping Antalya and flying directly home from Cappadocia. But the beach days are what save the trip for kids — without them, you'd have four cities in seven days, which is exhausting. Stick to 10 if you can.

Is this safe for solo travelers with kids?

Yes, Turkey is safe for families. Stick to tourist areas, use official taxis (yellow ones with meters), and don't let kids wander in Grand Bazaar. The biggest risk is stomach bugs — avoid street food that's been sitting out.

What if the balloon flight gets cancelled?

Balloons cancel often due to wind. If yours is cancelled, ask your hotel to rebook for the next morning. If you only have one morning in Cappadocia, take a sunrise hike in Rose Valley instead — free and almost as memorable.

Should I book this through a tour company?

No need. Book flights and hotels yourself (Skyscanner, Booking.com). For balloon and transfers, use your hotel's concierge — they'll charge the same as online. Tour companies add 30% markup for the same itinerary.

Best month for this route?

April-May or September-October. June-August is too hot for Istanbul walking and Cappadocia hikes, though Antalya beach is fine. December-February is cold and some Cappadocia hotels close. March and November are borderline — pack layers.
