Istanbul itineraries by trip length

Four day-by-day Istanbul plans — pick by how many nights you have. Each includes real costs at three budget tiers, where to stay for that length of trip, and what to skip.

Istanbul is the most-asked Turkey question on this site. The right number of nights is almost always more than people initially book. A weekend isn't enough; a week is more than most first-timers need. The four lengths below — 3, 5, 7 and 10 days — cover the realistic range. Each plan is calibrated to a different traveller: the speed-tour, the comfortable first trip, the cultural deep-dive, and the slow-Istanbul stay with day trips.

Use the cards below to jump straight to the length that matches your dates. Every plan has the same structure: morning/afternoon/evening per day, where to sleep (with neighbourhood and price band), what to eat (by category, no fabricated restaurant names), and one explicit "skip this" tip per day. Budgets are broken out into three real-money tiers — backpacker, mid-range, and luxury — because the gap between a hostel-dorm Istanbul trip and a Bosphorus-suite Istanbul trip is genuinely enormous.

Which length is right for you

3 days is the long-weekend trip. You'll see Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Basilica Cistern, the Grand Bazaar, the Bosphorus, and Beyoğlu's nightlife — but you won't linger. Best for European travellers with a short flight and a clear "highlights" agenda.

5 days is the comfortable first trip. The 3-day list above plus the Asian side (Kadıköy and Üsküdar), a slow morning at a hamam, and time to find a meyhane evening that doesn't feel rushed. This is what we'd recommend for most North American or Asian travellers — the marginal cost of two extra nights is small; the marginal experience gain is huge.

7 days is for the cultural deep-dive — Bosphorus villages by ferry, the Princes' Islands as a half-day, Chora Church mosaics, hidden Beyoğlu, and time to absorb one neighbourhood rather than skim ten. The 7-day plan stops trying to "cover" Istanbul and starts trying to inhabit it.

10 days works for travellers building Istanbul in alongside day trips — Bursa for tombs and İskender, Edirne for the Selimiye Mosque, the Princes' Islands as full overnights, even a 2-day side trip to Cappadocia bolted on. The 10-day plan is also where the cost gap between tiers becomes real; budget-tier travellers should be honest about whether their dollars stretch this far.

Combining Istanbul with other Turkish cities

Most first-time visitors pair Istanbul with one other destination. The canonical combos are Istanbul + Cappadocia (7 days) and Istanbul + Cappadocia + an Aegean stop (10 days). For couples, our 8-day honeymoon plan adds a Mediterranean clifftop. For families, the 10-day family plan finishes at an all-inclusive on the Antalya coast. The single-city Istanbul plans below are for travellers who've chosen depth in one place over breadth across many.
